Proven, steady leadership.
My name is Malcolm Graham, and I’m running for Charlotte City Council in District 2.
I’m no stranger to politics in Charlotte, having served on the Charlotte City Council as well as the North Carolina Senate. Throughout my career in our city, I’ve earned a reputation for bold ideas and a record of accountability and results on many initiatives that have created positive change for our community.
However, I know elections are not about the past, but the future.
I’m running for City Council because I see a great deal of challenges — and opportunities — for all of us who work and live in District 2. I want to be part of the way forward, and that begins by making sure change happens with our community members — not to them.
The Issues
Here are a few of the issues that are important to me — because they’re important to you:
Community Revitalization
& Gentrification
District 2 is fast-gentrifying, and that means we need to welcome new businesses and residents at the same time we’re respecting the long-standing history of our long-time residents and businesses. Through my work with the West Trade Street and Beatties Road Task Force, I’m aware of what’s needed to strike that delicate balance.
Guns & Public Safety
So far in 2019, Charlotte has already surpassed the total number of gun-related homicides in 2018 — and we still have several months to go before the end of the year. I’ll be working toward common-sense gun reform solutions in our city to ensure our communities are safe places for people to live and work.
District 2 as “One District”
I often see and hear an “us vs. them” mentality in our district, particularly with the two sides of the Corridor. We’re all one district — something we have to remember as we’re working together to preserve this district’s history and create economic opportunities and affordable housing for those who live here.
Get to Know Malcolm
I’ve called Charlotte home since I came to the city to attend Johnson C. Smith university on a tennis scholarship — and I’ve lived here ever since. My family and I have lived in the same house — now in District 2 — for over 26 years, and we have a great deal of pride in this community
